Beginning in 1966, the Project Concern interdistrict voluntary school desegregation program transported Hartford city students to suburban schools to promote racial diversity and higher quality education. After the 1996 Sheff v O’Neill ruling, the program was reorganized and renamed as “Project Choice,” and later “Open Choice.” In this documentary, the program founders, staff, and past and present students reminisce on their experiences and the lessons it taught them. Most interviews were conducted at a 40th anniversary celebration hosted by the Capitol Region Education Council and the Sheff Movement Coalition in December 2006, or in subsequent follow-up interviews.
